Just about two weeks back, I found myself running short of animes to watch, and so with a whim, I turned to Amatsuki. Expecting typical shonen action, high-school-guy-transported-to-different-dimension-and-became-a-hero sort of stuff, I was surprised to find myself hugely entertained by the plot. I have to admit though I am quite a fan of historical feudal plots, that alone is already a big plus for me and I could be slightly biased.
Animation quality by Studio DEEN is decent, but not great. And it all seems a bit cheap, with the low broadcast quality compared to other shows this season. It makes me wonder why shows with great potential like this are not as well treated as those brainless-ecchi series. Also, with only 13 episodes announced, I wondered if it would be sufficient to cover the 7 published volumes (ongoing manga), or would there be a second season? I guess as long as it doesn’t turn into a filler-spoiled series, I would be happy and would not mind the wait.
Fukuyama Jun, who is already in 5 other series this season (Code Geass, Vampire Knight, Special A, xxxHolic Kei, Macross Frontier), is voicing the lead in Amatsuki as well, and doing a great job as usual.
So far, I have enjoyed the series, it’s intriguing and quite entertaining. I have no idea what’s going to happen next and I guess that’s what keeping me in the show.
